Difference between Wildlife Sanctuary and National park : Hi friends ours’s today topic is once again related to nature and natural heritage. Almost in every part of the world the wildlife are protected by earmarking certain areas as wildlife Sanctuary and National parks.

Due to rapid and constant industrialisation and deforestation, our wildlife faces the danger of extinction. To avoid such situation all Governments across globe used to declare some areas of their territory as Wildlife Sanctuary and National parks.

Why have National parks and Sanctuaries been Established

These have been established to protect and control poaching, smuggling, and illegal trade of wildlife in the country. In India the The Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 paves the way for the establishment of Protected Areas.

Coming to the statistics there are 104 National Parks in India. The first national park in India was established as Hailey National Park in the year 1936.

The Hailey national park was later renamed as Jim Corbett National Park. This National park lies in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand state in India.

Difference between Wildlife Sanctuary and National park

The basic function of wildlife sanctuary and national park are same as both are earmarked to protect flora and fauna of a particular area.

Primarily Wildlife sanctuaries are designated area which provides protection and favorable living conditions to the wild animals.

Whereas the National parks provide protection to the entire ecosystem, i.e flora, fauna, landscape, biosphere etc. of a particular region. Lets us understand the both in detail.

Wildlife sanctuaries

Wildlife sanctuaries are the areas which are designated exclusively for use and protection of wildlife habitat. These are reserved exclusively for wildlife which includes animals, reptiles, insects, birds etc. It provides safe, healthy and protected living conditions to the wildlife.

Especially the endangered species are being protected in these sanctuaries. Some endangered animals used to get shifted in these wildlife sanctuaries. The basic aim of these sanctuaries to provide a safe asylum to the endangered species which are otherwise prone to hunting and poaching.

National Parks

National parks provides protection to the entire ecosystem, i.e flora, fauna, landscape, biosphere etc. These areas are specially designated by Governments to conserve wildlife provide a diversion of environmental and landscape heritage.

These parks are home to myriads of birds, animals, microorganisms, and insects and many more. The following activities such as cultivation, plantation, grazing, predating and hunting of animals, as well as destruction of flowers are strictly banned in National Parks.

National Parks are can only be visited after obtaining official permissions from concerned authorities. One of their objective is to safeguard the natural and historic objects of the wildlife of the region.

The boundaries of these parks are fixed with the help of legislation.Whereas Wildlife Sanctuary don’t have fixed boundaries at all.
Human activity are strictly prohibited in National parks.Human activities are permitted to some extant. In some cases traditional as well as organic farming is allowed.
National parks never can be downgraded to Wildlife Sanctuary. Whereas a Wildlife sanctuary can be upgraded as a National park.
